Benefits of Recycling

THE field at Taman Oakland near Seremban was covered in a sea of blue and green as the state chapter of the Girl Guides Association took the initiative to promote recycling habits in the new residential area.

Guest of honour, Raja Datin Seri Salbiah Tengku Nujumudin, wife of Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan spoke at length on the benefits of recycling.

Raja Salbiah, who is also the president of the state chapter, said the Taman Oakland residents were the first to be roped into the community project aimed at educating the public on the benefits of recycling.

“Waste from housing estates are among the main pollutants of our rivers and waterways,” she said adding the source of the problem could be checked if residents were educated on the proper disposal of wastes.

Global warming is a looming threat and we should all work together to save our environment,” she said.

The programme, which was conceptualised by the Girl Guides, got off the ground with the support and sponsorship from the Seremban Municipal Council (MPS), Southern Waste Management (SWM) and Samsung.

Raja Salbiah was confident that the people would be receptive to the programme as residents had brought along their recyclable garbage during the launch.

State Girl Guides commissioner S. Jeyadhevi said the programme was to create more awareness on recycling.

“This is a collective effort, something that should start from the family unit itself,” she said adding that a group of 20 girl guides had gone door to door before the project’s launch to distribute information pamphlets and encourage families to participate in this recycling campaign.

She said SWM, which was responsible for collecting the recyclable rubbish once fortnightly would compensate residents for the recyclable items.

“Residents would have to sort out paper, plastic and aluminium products in reusable plastic bags. All it takes is a little effort,” she said adding that Samsung had sponsored 3,000 bags for the purpose.

State SWM general manager Dr Al Ashari Othman thanked the girl guides for the initiative and hoped more residents would recycle their household waste.

“This is the first project of its kind. We hope to use this project as an example and have more such centres in other residential areas,” he said.

Bukit Kepayang assemblyman Chan Khee Voon who was also present reiterated the need for greater awareness on the importance of preserving the environment.

Learning about recycling is not enough. We have to practice it ourselves,” he said.
